XTERRA Returns to Los Cabos
Hosted in the ‘Tourist Corridor’ on the outskirts of San Jose del Cabo, XTERRA Cabo is a sports and family-friendly festival designed for recreational athletes who want to compete and also have a good time.
Slated for Nov. 21 - 22, XTERRA offers a series of races graded Easy, Intermediate, and Difficult. Events are staged at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, a place “where warm saltwater, desert terrain and wide open coastal views feel both inviting and demanding,” according to the event’s promoters. Age groups for men and women range from 20-24 to 80+. Events for youngsters are also scheduled.
The ocean swim contrasts sharply with the desert portions of the triathlon, starting with a 32 km mountain bike route that takes cyclists through Cabo’s cactus-studded foothills. Riders can expect demanding climbs, exhilarating descents and desert landscapes framed by the sea. The route must be completed twice to cover the total distance.
The triathlon’s final stage is a 10 km run. Competitors must summon the stamina to run a footrace on rolling desert terrain with an elevation gain of over 300 feet. As with the cycling portion, the running route must be completed twice.
- Full Distance Triathlon. XTERRA’s keystone event on Nov. 21 is a race built on challenge and discovery. Competitors begin with a 1.5 km open water swimming event, an endurance test in the Sea of Cortes. The beach entry and exit are soft and clear of rocks, with fine sand underfoot.
- Sprint Distance Triathlon. With its shorter distances and less technical courses, this is the ideal three-event race for first-timers and those looking to go fast and finish quickly. Scheduled for Nov. 21, the legs for this competition are a 700-meter swim, a 17 km bike route and a 5 km run. This scaled-down triathlon is also a Youth B and Junior Qualifier for the XTERRA Youth World Championship.
- Triathlon Kids. The segments for this contest, a 300-meter swim, a 6 km bike route and a 2 km. run were created for youth ages 9 - 15. It’s ideal for novices and young athletes alike. This race on Nov. 21 is also the Youth A Qualifier for the XTERRA Youth World Championship.
- Obstacles Kids Race. Slated for Nov. 21 at the Cabo Sports Complex, this 1 km obstacle race, designed for youngsters, offers an exciting experience full of fun and challenges. All finishers receive a medal.
- Trail Desert Half Marathon. This 21 km run on Nov. 22, featuring a course defined by desert trails threaded through diverse terrain, is a perfect combination of speed, fun and technical prowess.
- Fun Run. The XTERRA Cabo Fun Run, a 6 km race on Nov. 22, is the perfect competition for trail runners who enjoy shorter distances. It’s also an ideal opportunity for everyone, regardless of fitness level, to run, jog or walk the course. It’s competitive for those who want it to be, but the accent is on fun.
At the EXTERRA Awards Ceremony event, medals will be awarded to the top three men and women finishers in each category. True to its generous spirit, XTERRA Cabo will also award a medal to each entrant who completes a triathlon. Attendees can enjoy a variety of delicious foods, dance to the rhythm of live music, and relax with a frosty beverage at the ceremony.
