XTERRA Comes to Cabo
Following a race briefing on Nov. 21, the first event on the schedule is a full-distance triathlon, the classic XTERRA race. The event will kick off at The Club at Solaz. Competitors begin with a challenging 1.5 km. open water swim, an endurance test in the Sea of Cortez where each stroke will be a combination of strength, technique, and determination.
Next is the most exciting segment of the triathlon: a 32 km. mountain bike route, an epic adventure that takes cyclists through varied terrains, from winding trails to steep descents in a gorgeous desert setting. The route must be completed twice to cover the total distance.
The triathlon’s final stage is a 10 km. run on rolling desert terrain that, following the cycling and swimming events, will challenge and inspire competitors. As with the cycling event, the running route must be completed twice.
The Sprint Distance Triathlon, also slated for Nov. 22, is a scaled-down version of the full-distance triathlon. The legs for this race, starting at The Club at Solaz, are a 700-meter swim, a 17 km. bike route and a 5 km. run.
XTERRA Cabo’s Kids Triathlon sets it apart from other multi-disciplinary competitions. The shorter distances and less demanding courses make this event accessible to young athletes and novices alike. The segments for this contest are a 300-meter swim, a 6 km. bike route and a 2 km. run.
Participants in the Kids Triathlon must be between 8 and 14 years old. A photo ID from a parent or guardian with the child’s name is required to pick up the race packet. The starting location for this event is The Spot at Solaz.
For the swim portion of triathlons, wetsuits are permitted if the water temperature is below 24°C (75.2°F). Swim caps are provided and must be worn.
For the cycling stage, helmets are mandatory at all times while on the bike. Drafting is not allowed. All bikes must be inspected and approved during designated check-in times.
Aid stations with water and energy drinks will be available for the bike and run stages of each triathlon. First aid stations will also be available. Races will take place rain or shine, but organizers reserve the right to modify or cancel the event in case of severe weather conditions.
Preliminary results will be posted online within 24 hours after the races.
For adult participants, a Beer Fest is scheduled at the Cabo Sports Complex, a spacious facility that hosts an annual professional tennis tournament. The awards ceremony will be held there as well, and medals will be awarded to the top three men and women in each category. True to its generous spirit, XTERRA Cabo will also award a medal to each entrant who completes a triathlon.
Deadline for registration is Nov. 20. For information on fees and other race-related data, visit: https://www.xterraplanet.com/event/xterra-cabo
