Sea Turtle Season at Quivira Los Cabos: A Record Year for Conservation
Living along the Pacific coast brings opportunities to witness some remarkable moments in nature, and sea turtle season is among the most anticipated. Through Q Life, Quivira Los Cabos residents and their guests have the opportunity to experience one of them firsthand: watching newly hatched sea turtles begin their journey across the sand toward the ocean.
That journey is also the culmination of months of work by Grupo Pueblo Bonito’s Sea Turtle Conservation Program, which has helped protect sea turtles in Los Cabos since 2003. And in 2026, the program is experiencing what is already shaping up to be one of its most successful nesting seasons to date.
As of August 17, the Sea Turtle Conservation team had recorded 807 nests and protected 86,679 eggs. At the same point in 2025, 529 nests had been registered, meaning this year’s total represents an impressive 53 percent increase. The season is already progressing from nesting to hatching as well: 63 nests have hatched so far, resulting in 5,732 hatchlings released into the Pacific.
A Remarkable Nesting Season
For Veronica Sánchez, who leads Grupo Pueblo Bonito’s Sea Turtle Conservation Program, the numbers tell two stories. They reflect an especially active nesting season, but they also represent the dedication of the conservation team and ongoing improvements in the techniques used to locate, collect, protect, and relocate nests in accordance with current species protection regulations.
The team’s work centers primarily on the olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), which accounts for approximately 99 percent of recorded nesting activity in the municipality of Los Cabos. Other sea turtle species also make their way onto the region’s beaches to nest.
Peak nesting activity typically occurs during July, August, and September, making these some of the most demanding months for the conservation team. Field technicians patrol more than five kilometers of beach day and night, locating nests, monitoring incubation conditions and sand temperatures, and carefully tracking their progress.
The intensity of this year’s season became especially apparent during one extraordinary three-day period in the El Médano area. The team assisted in receiving and protecting 105 nests containing 11,515 eggs. Moments like this require an enormous coordinated effort, but they also demonstrate why consistent monitoring and conservation work are so important during the height of nesting season.
Hatching Releases Return to Q Life
With the first nests now hatching, another special part of sea turtle season has begun. The 2026 Hatching Release Season officially started August 10, giving Quivira Los Cabos residents and their guests the opportunity to see the conservation program in action through Q Life.
Complimentary releases for Quivira residents and their guests are scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays, with reservations available through the Quivira Concierge. Because the turtles ultimately determine the schedule, release days and times are subject to change based on hatching activity and weather conditions.
The experience begins at 6:30 p.m. with a brief presentation from the conservation team, offering participants an opportunity to learn more about the turtles, ask questions, and take photographs. At approximately 6:45 p.m., the hatchlings are released for their journey toward the Pacific, with the experience concluding around 7:00 p.m. at the Beach Club.
Residents who have their own transportation, whether a rented golf cart or private vehicle, are asked to please park at the golf course. A staff member will then direct you to the beach access point. Please keep in mind that reaching the release area requires a walk of approximately five to fifteen minutes along the beach, which should be considered for anyone who may require additional time or assistance.
Helping Protect the Next Generation
The release of each hatchling marks the culmination of weeks of careful monitoring and protection by the Sea Turtle Conservation team. For the Quivira community, witnessing that journey offers a meaningful connection to the conservation work taking place along the shores of Los Cabos and to the remarkable natural environment that surrounds us.
