Quivira Los Cabos Fun Facts

In the world of Google searches and AI, there’s an amazing amount of information literally at your fingertips. Here’s our round-up of Quivira Los Cabos’ most interesting fun facts.

1. What’s in a Name. Quivira's unique name was inspired by the ancient legend of the Seven Cities of Cibola, the mythical lands of gold that 16th-century Spanish explorers believed existed somewhere in the southwest of North America. Quivira, much like the fabled city of El Dorado, was rumored to be the most golden place of all, but alas, no explorer before or since has ever found it.

2. Paraiso Escondido. Translated as “hidden paradise,” Paraiso Escondido refers to the discrete valley sheltered by tall mountains that shelter Quivira’s 1,850-acre oceanfront property from the outside world. Situated a mere 10-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas, the valley’s unique geography ensures that Quivira will always be a tranquil hideaway far removed from the commercial hubbub of the city’s downtown area. This sequestered valley, which stairsteps down to the sea along a serpentine road carved into the flank of a mountain, has fulfilled its promise as the ideal setting for a world-class resort community.

3. Jack Nicklaus = The “Golden Amigo.” Opened in 2014, Quivira Golf Club was the sixth course built by Jack Nicklaus in Los Cabos. Jack, who first visited Los Cabos in the 1960s to relax and troll for trophy marlin, put Cabo on the international golf map with his designs at Palmilla in 1992 and Cabo del Sol two years later. He’s since returned to build four additional layouts, single-handedly catapulting Los Cabos into the golf destination stratosphere. If his output is prolific, so is his enthusiasm. “I couldn’t be happier with the way things have evolved in Los Cabos,” Nicklaus said. “It’s nice to have a legacy of spectacular courses in one of my long-time favorite places.” Quivira, an engineering marvel and strategic gem with stunning ocean views from every hole, may be the most breathtaking creation on Jack’s extensive resume. As a sidelight, the sea invasion scene in Troy, the swords-and-sandals film starring Brad Pitt (2004), was shot not in the Aegean Sea but on the long stretch of deserted beach below Quivira’s par-5 13th hole, a 625-yard odyssey just as epic as the movie.

4. Whales Love Quivira. Late last February, a pod of 30 to 40 gray whales, adults and juveniles alike, could be seen frolicking several yards from shore near the golf club’s practice facility. According to director of golf Antonio Reynante, this is a commonplace occurrence during the winter months. It is believed that whales like to rub their bellies on the sandy, gravelly ocean floor to remove barnacles, a form of exfoliation. Either that or they want to see what the golfers are up to!

5. Burger Sliders. It’s a good enough reason to take up golf. That’s how good the burger sliders are at the Oasis, Quivira Golf Club’s main comfort station. Created based on player preferences, the chef’s ‘secret recipe’ patty is cooked on the grill and served with melted American cheese, lettuce and tomato. Whether one (very) big bite or maybe two or three smaller bites, it is totally satisfying, especially with a dollop of hot sauce. Choose carefully: the trio of sauces at the Oasis ranges from mild and medium to muy caliente.

6. The Market at Quivira. A unique culinary concept unlike any other in Los Cabos, The Market has redefined the region’s gastronomic options with its authentic “food hall” experience. Inspired by modern food emporiums found in major U.S. and European cities, including the Plaza Hotel in New York and Harrods in London, The Market features an enticing array of eateries and a handsome central bar. The spacious open-floor complex offers everything from eclectic Asian fare and regional Mexican cuisine to an urban-themed sports bar (The After) and a 1950s American-style diner that serves an excellent breakfast plus burgers, hot dogs and milkshakes.

7. The BEST Margarita. Search far and wide, you won’t find a better a better margarita in Los Cabos than the one served at the Lobby Bar at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. The bartenders here specialize in the creation of what they call the Signature Margarita. It is made with top-shelf Clase Azul tequila (the one in the blue and white ceramic bottle), Cointreau, Grand Marnier, agave syrup, and fresh lime and lemon juice. It is incomparable. Enjoy the banter in the wood-beamed bar--or savor the drink on the open-air terrace overlooking the ocean. Salud!
