October Welcomes Cabo’s Top Fishing Tournaments

It’s September. For big-game fishermen around the globe, that means one thing: the world’s largest, richest and most prestigious fishing tournaments are just around the corner.  

More big-game fish are caught in Los Cabos, a.k.a. “Marlin Alley,” than anywhere else in the world. October, when marlin fishing is at its peak, yields the largest trophy fish--and the biggest jackpots. If you’ve ever dreamed of putting together a team and chasing that million dollar fish, now is the time and Cabo is the place to do it.   

Because the region’s nutrient-rich waters attract numerous prized species, the high-catch success rate applies even to neophytes. But make no mistake: the pair of top-tier fishing tournaments described below tends to attract highly motivated sportsmen in quest of giant fish—and gigantic cash prizes. 

Here’s what’s in store next month in Cabo San Lucas, a renowned deep-sea fishing mecca that came of age in the 1950s, a time when the billfish were jumping in the boat. 

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore. Any fishing tournament with “Bisbee’s” in the name is a big deal in gamefish circles. Slated for Oct. 12 – 17, the "Little Bisbee's" is all grown up with a $2.7M+ purse. This premier competition in Cabo San Lucas would be the talk of the town were it not a friendly warm-up for the biggest and most prestigious fishing tournament of the year (see below). The LCO blends serious competition with genuine camaraderie. It’s a social, fun-filled event where anglers can meet swap tall tales and dream about winning a huge sum for a big catch. While the Bisbee’s Black & Blue, the marquee event, focuses exclusively on marlin, the LCO has valuable categories for tuna and dorado in addition to the prestigious billfish division.  

 

Bisbee’s Black & Blue. Known as the “Super Bowl of Fishing,” Bisbee’s Black & Blue is the ‘big kahuna,’ the undisputed crown jewel of competitive sport fishing. It’s the one event that every deep-sea angler wants to win. Promoted as five days of “organized chaos,” this high-energy jamboree attracts fishermen (and women) from around the world as well as thousands of spectators who throng the Cabo San Lucas marina to take part in the excitement. The mission for participants is clear: hook and land giant black and blue marlin in the waters off Los Cabos.  

Scheduled for Oct. 19–24, the Bisbee’s Black & Blue marks its 45th anniversary this year. Founded in 1981 by Bob Bisbee, a legendary fisherman, conservationist and philanthropist, this exceptional event has expanded from six teams with a modest purse of $10,000 to more than 150 teams with millions of dollars on the line. With a prize purse exceeding $11.5 million, the Bisbee’s Black & Blue is a high-stakes tournament where a single catch can yield a seven-figure payday—and a permanent place in fishing lore. During the three fishing days (Oct. 21–23), the weigh station in front of Puerto Paraiso Mall is THE place to evaluate the catch starting at 2:00 p.m. Expect spirited, Mardi Gras-style revelry.
