Earth Day: Honoring the Planet We Call Home

Earth Day: Honoring the Planet We Call Home

While Earth Day on April 22 has already passed, its message continues to resonate year-round, especially at Quivira Los Cabos. The annual observance marks the birth of the modern environmental movement, dating to the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Since then, the movement’s far-reaching network has mobilized over one billion people annually to protect the planet on Earth Day (and every day).

“Our Power, Our Planet,” the organizers stated, “is a commitment to stewardship, resilience, and shared accountability — a call for every individual, community, and sector to exercise their power in service of the planet we all depend on.”

For its part, Quivira Los Cabos has embraced eco-friendly investments and best-use practices designed to minimize damage to the Baja’s fragile environment. Through careful planning and innovative programs, the company’s hotel and real estate entities ensure that its developments can coexist in harmony with nature.

Among the environmental highlights at the 1,850-acre resort and residential community:

  • Water Conservation. Water management strategies ensure efficient use of this resource, which is precious in the Baja Desert. Currently active are seven desalination plants, which reduce dependence on natural water sources; and two water treatment plants. Recycled water is used to irrigate the property’s gardens and golf course. Implementation of these programs has led to a 30% reduction in water consumption across all properties over the past three years.
  • Energy Efficiency & Green Innovations. Energy-efficient technologies such as LED lighting, smart thermostats, and solar water heaters have been installed throughout the properties, resulting in a 20% annual reduction in energy consumption and preventing 1,200 tons of CO2 emissions per year. In addition, 50% of all exterior and landscape lighting is powered by renewable energy sources, while the use of smart thermostats has reduced air conditioning use.
  • Composting and Biodiesel Programs. To promote sustainable practices, the company has turned to composting and biodiesel initiatives. Five to seven tons of compost, produced annually using organic waste from the hotels and restaurants, is used to fertilize the community’s gardens and green spaces. The new biodiesel program, utilizing spent cooking oil from hotel kitchens, is converted into an eco-friendly fuel for maintenance vehicles and machinery, reducing the community’s carbon footprint.
  • Sustainable Materials & Construction. Quivira applies strict sourcing and building practices to minimize its ecological footprint. All construction materials are sourced from certified suppliers who meet regulations for legal and sustainable production. As part of a zero-deforestation policy, all native trees and plants are transplanted during construction to a designated conservation area.
  • Turtle Protection Program. Since 2003, the resort development’s turtle protection program has safeguarded endangered species that nest along the shoreline, protecting nearly 2,000 turtle nests annually. The nesting grounds, a carefully monitored 4-kilometer stretch of coastline, allows for the release of tens of thousands of hatchlings each year. The program fosters community engagement involving residents, hotel guests, and local schools in these protection efforts.
  • Amakiri Botanical Garden. Situated in Quivira Los Cabos, this nature reserve, threaded with walking paths, is dedicated to conserving native plant species indigenous to the Baja California peninsula. The garden, home to over 300 different plant varieties (including endangered and protected species), is a vital resource for biodiversity and environmental education.

Quivira is more than a community; it’s a model for responsible development that prioritizes the environment and the preservation of natural resources.

In sum, every day is Earth Day at Quivira Los Cabos and Pueblo Bonito Resorts.
