Art Walk Resumes in San Jose del Cabo
Art Walk, one of the most enjoyable and entertaining outdoor events in all of Los Cabos, is back on the calendar starting November 5.
Each Thursday evening through June, the streets of San Jose del Cabo’s historic Art District come alive with color, culture and people. Tucked behind the town’s landmark church off Plaza Mijares (the main square) is a diverse array of art galleries, artisan shops and inviting cantinas set along colonial-era cobblestone lanes. Doors are open from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Obregon Street (the main road) and its cobblestone arteries are closed to car traffic during Art Walk, transforming the center of town into a pedestrian thoroughfare where live bands (traditional mariachi to rock ‘n roll) perform on street corners and rooftops, and where performance artists entertain visitors at the drop of a hat.
More than a dozen Gallery District Association members, recognizable by a bronze plaque posted outside each establishment, invite strollers to meet artists, view exhibits and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or tequila in a warm, convivial atmosphere. Genres range from painting and sculpture to folk art, ceramics, jewelry and photography by Mexican and international artists. In addition, boutiques and shops carry pieces by notable local artists and artisans. No pressure to buy. You’re free to browse and enjoy.
Among the must-see art galleries in San Jose del Cabo: Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery, Frank Arnold Gallery, Galeria Corsica, Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery, Galeria de Ida Victoria, La Sacristia, Desertica Art Gallery, Arte Gallery, and Mata Ortiz Pottery, among others.
Plan to arrive early for Art Walk and stay for dinner. In addition to pop-up food vendors, the charming Art District is home to some of Cabo’s finest and most authentic restaurants. Among the current favorites in the colonial district:
- Come a Casa – Siblings and business partners Christopher and Jessica specialize in fresh pasta (the short rib pappardelle is superb), wood-fired pizza (11 different options) and homemade desserts, including tiramisu.
- SAGE Baja - Opened in 2024, SAGE reinterprets indigenous Baja flavors, its menu focused on farm-to-table fare. Good vegan options. The dining area is an open-air patio shaded by tall trees. Great cocktails and wine list.
- Lumbre - Chefs use an old wood stove or an iron-and-brick oven to prepare dishes in an open kitchen. Ingredients are sourced from local fishermen, ranchers and farmers. The “Sea Life Over Flames” appetizers are terrific.
- Ruba’s Bakery & Bistro - Known for its baked goods and hearty breakfasts, Ruba’s also has an excellent dinner menu featuring Mediterranean cuisine and classic bistro fare.
- Los Tres Gallos (The Three Roosters) - A brick-walled outpost of the popular Mexican restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, this lively spot has a sidewalk bar that serves margaritas.
Note that many San Jose restaurants can be very busy on Art Walk night. Reservations are recommended.
For easiest access by car, park on Calle Centenario at the foot of Morelos Street (near the yellow-walled El Encanto Inn & Suites) and walk into town from there. You’ll be immediately embraced by the Art Walk’s festive atmosphere, with colorful sheets of papel picado (perforated paper) strung overhead. The most enjoyable open-air event in Cabo? This is it.
