Whale Watching Season in Los Cabos Kicks Off Dec. 15

They’re back! Pods of acrobatic humpback whales have already been spotted spouting and breaching in the warm, placid waters of Los Cabos. Following a migration of approximately 6,000 miles from the frigid Arctic Ocean, these magnificent mammals will call Cabo home through early April. Balmy weather, nutrient-rich waters and ideal salinity make the bays and lagoons at the tip of the Baja Peninsula the perfect place for whales to give birth and teach their young how to swim and survive in the ocean.

Of the eight whale species that venture to Los Cabos, the most popular are the humpbacks, which routinely thrust themselves out of the water in fantastic leaps. Humpback whales as well as gray whales, another common visitor, weigh in at about 40 tons, have an average life span of over 50 years, and measure approximately 12 to 16 meters (40 to 52 feet) from snout to tail. Their journey, the equivalent of driving roundtrip from New York to Los Angeles, is the longest passage undertaken by any land or aquatic animal.

Guests at Pueblo Bonito’s oceanfront resorts, Pacifica and Sunset Beach, can view these majestic creatures from their room balconies or from lookouts throughout the resort properties. Golfers playing Quivira Golf Club, the dazzling Jack Nicklaus-designed course that skirts sheer cliffs high above the sea, can also spot spouting whales from the layout’s elevated tees and greens.

For guests who want a more up close and personal look at these awe-inspiring mammals, hotel concierges can supply information on the best whale watching tours departing from Cabo San Lucas marina. Among the top outfitters is Cabo Adventures, which this year offers a new Whale Watching Cabo Photo Safari. Led by some of the region’s leading whale experts, this tour will take you out into the ocean where you’ll focus on tracking humpback whales. The experience of witnessing these sea giants at play as they spout, splash and breach the surface in gravity-defying arcs is unforgettable. In addition, participants on the Cabo Photo Safari can listen to the “whale song” through Cabo Adventures’ state-of-the-art hydrophones as marine mammal specialists explain how whales use sonar to communicate with each other in the ocean. Bring a towel and a sweater on this inflatable boat adventure--you’ll be flying with the whales and possibly getting splashed by their enormous tails!
