Art Walk Resumes in San Jose del Cabo

Art Walk Resumes in San Jose del Cabo

Art Walk, one of the most enjoyable and entertaining outdoor events in Los Cabos, is back on the calendar starting November 4.

Each Thursday evening from November through June, the streets of historic San Jose del Cabo’s Art District come alive with color, culture, and people. Tucked behind the town’s landmark church off Plaza Mijares (the main square) is a diverse array of art galleries, artisan shops and inviting cantinas and restaurants set along colonial-era cobblestone lanes. Doors are open from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Obregon Street, the main road, is closed to car traffic during Art Walk, transforming the center of town into a pedestrian thoroughfare where live bands (from traditional mariachi to rock ‘n roll) perform on street corners and rooftops. A recent welcome addition are performance artists who entertain visitors at the drop of a hat.

More than a dozen Gallery District Association members, recognizable by a bronze plaque posted outside each gallery, invite strollers to meet artists, view exhibits, and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or tequila in a warm, convivial atmosphere. Genres range from painting and sculpture to folk art, ceramics, jewelry and photography by Mexican and international artists.

Among the must-see galleries: Frank Arnold Gallery, Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery, Corsica Galeria de Arte, Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery, Galeria de Ida Victoria, and many more.

Plan to arrive early for Art Walk and stay for dinner. The city’s charming Art District is home to some of Cabo’s finest and most authentic restaurants. Also, there’s been an abundance of new restaurant openings in the town’s colonial neighborhoods. Among the current favorites is Los Tres Gallos (The Three Roosters), a brick-walled outpost of the stylish Mexican restaurant in Cabo San Lucas; Jardin Secreto (Secret Garden) an intimate, romantic dining spot with farm-to-table cuisine; and Yumana Kitchen, located in the main Plaza and serving “comfort” food inspired by an indigenous group, the Yumanos. Note that many

San Jose restaurants can be very busy on Art Walk night. Reservations are recommended.

For easiest access by car, park close to the foot of Morelos Street and walk into town from there. You’ll be immediately embraced by a festive atmosphere, and with reason: Art Walk is one of the most fun-filled, open-air events in all of Los Cabos.
