Baja Style: The Best Places for Tacos in Cabo

Good food is a staple of Mexican culture. Combine fresh-caught seafood with locally sourced ingredients, stir in a mix of cultural influences, and Los Cabos emerges as a destination worth savoring. Cabo, in fact, has perfected one of Mexico’s greatest contributions to the culinary world: tacos, both fish tacos (for which the region is famous); as well as other creative versions. Here’s our pick of the top places to sample this delectable staple.

Baja Cantina
Overlooking “mega-yacht row” in the Cabo San Lucas marina, Baja Cantina has been a favorite of locals and visitors for nearly 30 years. A repeat winner of the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, this landmark establishment is the favored hang-out of fishermen who compete in Cabo’s high-stakes sport-fishing tournaments, including the Bisbee’s Black & Blue. Opt for the first-rate fish tacos—catch of the day battered and fried, topped with cabbage salad, chipotle sauce, guacamole and mango Pico de Gayo salsa; or try the house specialty, shrimp “Gobernador” tacos, sautéed with chopped garlic and onion and served on corn tortillas with melted cheese, poblano pepper, guacamole and sauce Mexicana.

Urban Tacos at Pueblo Bonito Rosé

Facing one of the most beautiful beaches in Los Cabos, you will find the best taco feast in town. Urban Tacos at Pueblo Bonito Rosé offers the experience of eating tacos like a local but without leaving the property. Every Thursday by the pool enjoy the Mexican flavors of delicious tacos al pastor or a more stylish taco with some rib eye strips, a full deck of freshly made salsas and homemade tortillas.

Don Sanchez
A fixture in downtown San Jose del Cabo, Don Sanchez chef and owner Tadd Chapman has been turning out traditional Mexican cuisine and eclectic farm-to-table Baja cuisine for more than 20 years. Expect the unconventional at this restaurant. For example, the surf & turf taco is made with a beet tortilla, carrot puree, ribeye chicharron, crispy soft-shell crab, avocado mousse and charred habanero mayo. It is uniquely delicious. Also recommended is the lobster taco “Puerto Nuevo,” made with a flour tortilla, frijoles puercos, tempura lobster, creamy avocado, habanero cream, and pickled carrot and jicama. It elevates the humble taco to culinary art.

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach (Sky Pool)

Tacos with a view? It’s tough to beat the Sky Pool at Sunset Beach. Perched at the pinnacle of the sprawling resort’s terraced buildings, this two-tiered infinity-edge pool crowns a bluff 250 feet above the beach and sea. On the menu are tacos (crispy fried or soft-shell tortilla) filled with lettuce, tomatoes, cotija cheese, sour cream and served with Mexican sauce and a choice of chicken breast or grilled beef. Also recommended are the Ensenada-style fish tacos: tempura fish strips, lettuce, pickled red onions and chipotle cream in corn tortillas, served with guacamole and refried beans. The sea view is a perfect complement to these excellent tacos.

Tacos Rossy

Tucked away in downtown San Jose del Cabo, this casual eatery is a local favorite for a simple reason: It turns out some of the tastiest fish tacos in Cabo. Rossy’s classic taco de pescado is made from whatever fish was freshly caught that morning (generally sea bass) and is served plain. Basically, a piping-hot breaded filet atop a corn tortilla. The batter (which is not oily) renders the fish crispy while locking in the moisture. The restaurant has a extensive condiments bar that invites patrons to slather on a variety of salsas (red, green, guacamole), Pico de Gallo, and other raw accompaniments. Given the quality of the tacos, prices are exceptionally reasonable.

La Pintada

New on the Cabo San Lucas dining scene, La Pintada is the latest offering from Edith’s Group, which operates two well-established nearby restaurants, Edith’s and The Office on the Beach. Chef Edith Jimenez has assembled an array of dishes drawn from family recipes throughout Baja California Sur—and crossed them with Mediterranean flavors. Since its debut, diners have been clamoring for Chef Edith’s specialty tacos. These include Pastor chicken tacos (with cheese, pineapple, Mexican sauce and guacamole); Tatema’s beef taco (salsa tomatillo, onion and cilantro); and flank steak tacos (with beans and guacamole). La Pintada’s selection of draft beers is the best in town.
