Top Things to Do as a Family in Los Cabos

Los Cabos is a take-on-all-comers destination. And that includes children. With a wide-ranging menu of age-appropriate, family-friendly activities, Cabo holds out the promise of serious fun to kids of all ages, from land and sea adventures to a fantasyland of sweets.

Here’s our pick of a few activities and a culinary outing that are sure to deliver a memorable experience.

Water Sports. There’s a reason the French explorer Jacques Cousteau described the underwater realm of the Sea of Cortez as “The Aquarium of the World.” Large pelagic species cruise the region’s waters, while coral reefs, many attached to underwater volcanic formations, attract schools of colorful tropical fish. Here are a few options for adventurous youngsters:

Cabo Submarine. Cabo Expeditions operates a 60-foot, bright yellow submarine that’s semi-submersible, which means the top deck stays above the surface. Passengers can go below to gaze into the water and to observe the world beneath the waves. This is the easiest and safest way for kids to experience the wonders of the deep in Los Cabos. It’s educational, too: Guides share interesting tidbits about Baja California’s marine life and natural history during the tour. Children under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Swimming with Dolphins. Children love swimming with dolphins, and Pacific Bottlenose dolphins seem to enjoy the interchange just as much, if not more. Cabo Adventures offers a family-friendly dolphin program that enables kids ages 4 and up to hug, play with and swim with these, friendly, gentle, intelligent marine mammals. The outfitter’s dolphin encounters offer the comfort of a shallow-water platform to accommodate less-then-strong swimmers. The interactive programs at Cabo Adventures create a lifelong appreciation for one of the most loveable creatures in the sea.

Sea of Cortez Snorkeling Adventure. Cabo Adventures promotes a relaxing, scenic cruise on a luxury catamaran that offers beautiful views of pristine beaches and hidden coves on the way to Isla Partida, a beach paradise near La Paz. Participants (ages 5 and up) can snorkel with expert guides amid colorful corals, schools of tropical fish, manta rays, sea lions and other denizens of the deep in a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve brimming with marine life.

UTV’s Tour. ATV’s (all-terrain vehicles) are fine and dandy, but what you really want in the Baja desert is a UTV, a utility task vehicle that is large, powerful and allows for “side-by-side” passenger seating. Wild Canyon, a premier adventure park, offers a thrill-packed UTV tour that offers riders five different terrain challenges. Travel safely through privately-owned lands while crossing streams, outback desert, beachfront, and a hanging bridge. Take a break at the beach and soak in the breathtaking view, then continue along winding, hilly paths back to the park.

The Market at Quivira. Since its inception in 2016, The Market, inspired by modern food halls in the U.S. and Europe, has established itself as the finest gastronomic food hall experience in Los Cabos. A mecca for families based its casual dining concept, The Market’s open-floor complex features an enticing array of eateries, from Asian and Italian to the retro 1950s Diner, where burgers, hot dogs and fries are served at an old-school counter or in a cozy booth. When the meal is done, kids make a beeline for The Market’s sweet treats. For starters, there’s Los Helados, which offers a rainbow-like display of gelato and ice cream behind its glass case, with an equally inspiring array of toppings available. Las Crepas makes sweet and savory crepes to rival those found in a Parisian café. It’s the sweet crepes, from chocolate to Nutella, that tend to sweep kids of all ages off their feet. Finally, for the connoisseurs in the family, there’s El Chocolate, a signature outpost that artfully displays the finest-quality truffles, chocolates and macarons. Here are found the exquisite creations of one of the most celebrated chocolatiers in Mexico City. The vibrant colors of the little dome-shaped confections on display are enough to send most chocolate lovers into a tizzy. (Note: There’s an extra charge for El Chocolate).
